This year for Teya's birthday I recruited some help for her cake. My friend Laura is very artistic and happens to have a cake decorating kit so together we decided to tackle Teya's request for a Little Mermaid cake.
I've always wanted to do a cake with fondant and since I had backup I decided to give it a try. We got together on Tuesday to make the fondant and although we made a huge mess, it was a lot easier than I thought. Coloring it was a little work but it wasn't too bad. Then on Friday we baked the cakes and got to work decorating.

Teya made up the 3rd member of our team and was VERY involved in the process. She loved tasting the frosting, mixing the colors, and giving us her opinions on how we should decorate. While she and Laura stacked the cake I rolled out the fondant.

Once the cake was thoroughly frosted in buttercream we carefully laid the fondant on top.

Laura smoothed and pinched it into place

Then took a pizza cutter and cut out off the extras

After that she started piping on the scenery

She was so good with all the details and every time I looked back at the cake I was amazed at how well it was coming together.

Here's the finished product. We were quite pleased with ourselves!

We used brown sugar at the bottom to look like sand and melted white chocolate into a seashell mold to make the shells. Teya was thrilled and proclaimed it, "the most beautiful cake EVER!"

Obviously I couldn't have done it myself, so many many thanks to Laura for all her help and yay for team baking!

That is awesome! You're a regular Ace of Cakes. ;)
Becca, that IS the most beautiful cake EVER! Absolutely gorgeous. What an amazing woman of multiple talents you are, my friend. Happy Birthday to cute Teya!
Nice work! That cake is awesome! I can't believe she's having another birthday already! I swear I was just reading about her last one on your blog!(:
That cake is AWESOME! I am totally jealous I don't have mad skills like that. :) Did Teya have her birthday party this weekend? She is too cute helping out with the cake. :)
That cake is awesome! I need a talented friend like that! Good job on tackling fondant, I have heard it's super hard, and yours turned out super smooth and looked great!
I LOVE IT! That totally puts my humble cake to shame! hahahaha. You guys did a GREAT job! And you didn't make a quarter of the mess I made! hahaha. I bet Teya LOVES it:) Good job! Hope she has a fun Birthday!!
Holy CRAP! You guys are talented STUDS! And Teya is right, it is the most beautiful cake ever. Good job guys and Happy Birthday Teya!
Was it painful to cut into? If I made a creation that awesome I don't think I would want to eat it!!
Jamie: Yes, it totally hurt to cut into it! In fact, Teya had a little melt down when she found out we were going to actually eat it. She wanted to keep it forever and ever. We managed to calm her down with promises of more Ariel cakes in the future. : )
That cake was soooo super duper CUTE! Although I'm taking a class, I don't think I have an imagination to do creative things like that. I think I'm more in Teya's boat on not wanting to eat a beautiful masterpiece :). Happy Birthday Teya!
Oh my gosh! That is so gorgeous! It doesn't even look real. I am such a horrible cake maker. My kids suffer with my creations. My mom can decorate like no one else, but I unfortunately didn't inherit her talent or desire. One year I made Abigail a mermaid cake and she ended up looking like the "tart" of the sea, if you get my drift. ; )
Oh, my. You make these for big-girl princesses, too right? Like ones that will be 27 on June 10th? :)
You and Laura did an AWESOME job!! The perfect cake for your little princess! Did it taste as good as it looks?
You ATE it? Nooo!! haha Wow, I mean W-O-W! That thing is awesome. Can Laura come to my house for birthdays? That really makes me want to spring for a nice cake decorating kit. I tried making Jarom a lion cake last year with one of those cheap piping bags and it was a DISASTER. I need a gun like that. Do you know where she got hers? I know they can be kinda pricey, but LOOK at that thing! Wow. Great job!
That cake was a beauty... I saw it firsthand right before the mayhem with knives and tears! Way to go creative wonders! :)))
Okay, I am speechless. That cake is amazing!!! It looks beyond professional. I don't think I can show my girls that, because they would never be happy with anything I make every again. Also, you can't give all the credit to your friend, because I remember Teya's pirate ship cake (was that last year?) and that was pretty awesome, too.
Dude, awesome job. Laura is such an great friend to help with that. You are so lucky that you find such cool people where ever you go.
LOVE IT!!
that is a great cake. Fondant is no easy feat!
it was soooo much fun! Teya was such a little grateful birthday girl it was a total blast!
