On Saturday morning our friends called us to see if we wanted to drive out to a coastal town called Portsmouth to get some breakfast at their favorite local restaurant. As I listened to the invitation I was thinking, "Wait a second, they want to drive an HOUR to eat breakfast?! THESE ARE MY KIND OF PEOPLE!" I take my food very seriously, and apparently so do they. We got dressed and picked them up and listened with giddiness as they described the mammoth size portions and amazing food combos offered at the Friendly Toast, where we would be eating.

The place was packed, but so worth the wait. When we finally got seated my taste buds were dancing as I scanned the menu with such fine offerings as Almond Joy waffles and M&M pancakes. I finally settled on the Caribbean waffle, which had toasted pecans in it and was topped with caramelized bananas. Total food ecstasy, let me tell you. Taber got huevos rancheros that were out of this world, Laura and Brandon got some amazing house specialities and the girls had some chocolate chip pancakes. We all kind of swapped around and sampled everything. So so good.

After we were completely stuffed we decided to walk around and check out some of the cute shops downtown. Portsmouth is right on the coast and has a very fun New Englandy feel to it. We looked at an art gallery, played in a toystore, and even found a new hat for Brinley.

I was amazed at how well the girls did just window shopping. They really stayed entertained and enjoyed the afternoon with us.

At one point we ran into a gallery with some really cool historical displays. Taber and I are readng 1776 right now (He's much farther into it than me) So it was cool to see some of the things we've been reading about.

On our way home we drove by the ocean so Teya could see where Ariel the Little Mermaid lives. She had to get out of course. It was pretty cold but she made Taber take her all the way to the water so she could sing to Ariel.

And the great thing about going with friends is we could actually get a pic with the whole family.

We didn't end up getting home from our "breakfast" date until 4 in the afternoon. : ) Still it was the best unplanned outing we have done in awhile. Laura and Brandon are really spontaneous and I'm glad they called us because we love getting out and seeing new things (and eating amazing food!) and we definitely wouldn't have found those places without them!

That is so FUN! There is nothing better than a great breakfast joint, I bet it felt like you were on vacation. And just look at that place. Why did New England have to be so charming and then no one else kept up? Oh well. Glad you guys had more fun exploring, it's so fun to tour New England with you!
all I have to say is, YUMMMMMY!
That place sounds sooo yummy! Too bad it's like half way around the world for us :). I LOVE food too!. Teya is so CUTE! Love how she sang to Ariel. Hope you got it on video. That would be so cute and funny to show her when she's older.
So fun!!! I'm totally making a bucket list for all the things Naomi and I will do with you guys when we decend on your house :) Sounds like an amazing place to be!
I feel honored to have made it to the blog. After a brief warning of...we like to take a lot of pictures. It makes for great memories and a mini scrapbook page on your blog. I love it! For the rest of you foodies out there I have a few other favorite breakfast places if you are in California or Victoria, Canada, I can recommend a place.
Wow, I think I like your kind of people, too. I love it when someone gets me to go out and do something spontaneous with the family that I might not have planned by myself. That breakfast sounded amazing! And I love your family picture on the shore - so pretty!
I'm so jealous! It's gorgeous there! And my mouth is watering... I don't know anywhere that I can get Caribbean waffles!!!
I would also recommend "Loaf and Ladle" for a great Portsmouth lunch experience. Absolutely delicious food and charming atmosphere!
Wow! I know you don't watch tv, but you should check out Guys Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives on the web. He goes to the best food places and a lot of them happen to be in Boston. Guy can make anything look good. I always want to go to the places he eats at.
