Perspective

Sundays can be challenging when you're trying to get a 2 year old to sit still for an hour in sacrament meeting. We bring treats, coloring books, toys, you name it, and still we wrestle the entire hour with our feisty toddler, trying to keep her volume at a decent level so those around us can enjoy the service. We are never very successful, and since she's learned to talk, she's louder than ever, shouting out an ongoing narrative of what's happening.

The chorister gets up to lead the hymn and she shouts "Moo-sic! Song!"
The song ends and she claps her hands loudly, "Yeah!"
Someone goes to give a prayer and she calls out "Payer!"
The deacons stand up to pass the sacrament and her volume increases, "BREAD! BREAD! WA-ER! BREAD!"

We try to hush her, our faces red as we shove fruit snacks and cheerios in her mouth trying to distract her, still she yells, "I want Bread! Bread Peeeze!"

Maybe it wouldn't be so bad if we didn't sit near the front, but at that point I feel like every eye in the chapel is burning a hole in my back, probably thinking, "Why can't that woman get her child under control?" I feel ashamed, my child is ruining the sacrament for our whole congregation, why did I even come?

And then when it's all over, a woman comes up to me and says, "I just want you to know that your daughter is the highlight of our sacrament meeting. Every Sunday we can't wait to see her walk in, shouting "Daddy! Daddy!" (Taber gets there early for meetings) "She keeps us entertained the whole time by her boisterous personality and little comments, I'm just so glad you guys are a part of our ward"

That's when I realize maybe Teya isn't that bad, maybe she's not ruining everyone's experience, maybe she's just making it more fun, and maybe I should relax and just laugh with them. I guess sometimes it helps to see things from someone else's perspective.

So funny & cute! As I was reading I was thinking how fun that would be to see her do that! I wouldn't mind either, she is way too cute.

Your V-Day idea is great! I'm going to look into doing it! Thanks! By the way, I agree, your little girl is way too cute to be a bother to anyone! It's funny how people watch you from afar. A lady in our ward told us her and her husband always like to watch our little girl in Sacrament mtg. she said they ask eachother is Chenoa eating now? Or playing? Or sleeping? I thought it was a little weird...but at the same time kinda sweet. haha...too funny though!

Yeah! I feel the same way!hahaha...I feel like my kid is the only kid acting up and that people must be thinking that I can't handle my only kid while so many other moms have more than 1 and their not acting up. haha Oh well...I'm wondering how my mom did all those years, cause I remember being not so reverent..heehee or just getting the giggles during the prayer....gues it's my pay back!

Great post! I'm so glad to hear that we're not the only ones that go through that. Unfortunately we usually hear the comments and murmurs of those around us, with just the opposite opinion. Sacrament and church in general takes on a new meaning with children. I'm beginning to realize that it's not quite as much about "me" anymore. My duty and responsibility is to my family now, to help them to learn and understand. And in a way the gospel has come to mean so much more. Instead of just worrying about if I'm being spiritually fed I try and ensure that my wife and son can feel the spirit as well. The Gospel is truly designed to accommodate every facet of our lives, eventually leading us to perfection...with our families.

I needed to hear that because even though Callie doesn't talk yet,she can be quite loud at church!

Oh Becca! I can SO remember that with Haela. She has calmed down a lot which is nice but I realize I don't get the cute comments from people anymore! I thought people must resent us too for ruining their sacrament but I realize the people without kids just treasure it and the people with kids can't hear it because they are trying to keep their kids quiet too! Anyway, love it! I miss you guys!

I can totally relate! Thank goodness for others who appreciate our little ones and understand we're just trying to do our best as parents, and their talkative behavior is just part of their new discovery and cuteness and pretty much out of our control at that age. Wish we could see her in action. She's adorable in her dress!

We've all been there! With the twins it was horrible, especially when Jason had to work. Even now, with one littl one it's tough. This past Sunday Allison walked all the way up to the bishop. I hung my head in shame, my face the brightest possible shade of red. I made Jason go get her since he was the one that let her get away. It's always a chore, but we keep going because we know eventually they'll get it. Hang in there! I bet she's the highlight of a lot of peoples' day. That was so kind of that lady to give you such a nice comment. Just when you're ready to throw in the towel... I call those the Lord's tender mercies and am thankful for them daily! Keep up the great work! I know you're a fantastic Mom! Teya is so lucky!
