So I have to say, I totally loved the movie. I thought it was TONS better than the first one, and I loved that one too. So yeah, I was pretty happy. Acting, script, makeup, all of it was better. Yes there were some laugh out loud cheesy moments (flash forward of Bella and Edward the bohemian vampires running through the forest, hilarious!) But I thought the Wolves were awesome and the Volturi were exactly how I imagined them. The Facepunch movie scene was SO funny and the Edward, Jacob, Bella love triangle was well played. Great movie, great night, and everyone had fun (especially my Dad : )

Wolf Girls...and Dad
Why do I love Twilight? Same reason I like junk food. It's good, it's addictive, and it's fun to enjoy with other people. Nothing wrong with a little junk food every now and then. Moderation in all things right?
While I was in Utah last week I indulged in a little New Moon brain candy with my mom, two of my sisters and our friend Kristen. We all wore Wolf Girl shirts, even my mom because she's awesome like that.
Somehow my Dad ended up joining our girls night out. He made some excuse about how he never sees Mom and something about date nights and blah blah blah... We all know he's big time team Jacob. Just own it Dad. Own it.
We got to the theater an hour early so we could have the perfect seats. It was actually great that Dad was there because then he could take pictures for us. And since I am me, I made him take a lot of pictures. I guess everyone was making weirdo faces in the other ones though so here's one with everyone normal (except for me, but I was pretty excited that night I guess this one works.)

Feeling the Love
I don't think I could've asked for a better birthday this year. So many people went out of their way to make me feel special, and believe me, I was feeling it!
The birthday love started last week when my dear friend Kara threw me a surprise party during playgroup. She made a delicious ham and asparagus quiche, chocolate chip pancake muffins, and the most DIVINE chocolate peanut butter cake ever to grace my taste buds.
I can't imagine how much time it took her to do all that cooking and have it ready by 10 in the morning! She really is an angel.
On my actual Birthday another dear friend, Maria, offered to watch the girls all morning so I could go to the temple. It was one of the most thoughtful and sweet gifts I've ever been given. Going to the temple on my birthday was so refreshing and such a wonderful way to start my day with love in my heart and a greater perspective on life.
While I was gone Maria helped the girls decorate the house with balloons and homemade signs. They also baked me a birthday cake and Teya got to decorate it. When I came home the girls were jumping around yelling "SURPRISE!" and "CHEESE!" (because that's what Brinley shouts when she's smiling : )
After Maria left, Brinley went down for a nap and Teya continued spoiling me with sweetness. She kept saying things like, "Happy birfday mommy, I'm so happy it's your birfday. Thank you so much for this birfday, it really makes me happy." She kept petting my hair and giving me hugs, then she offered to give me a birthday pedicure and manicure. Like my cake, it was done with so much love and affection; even if it was a little rough in spots, the gesture was so sweet I will never forget it!
That afternoon I received a fabulous candy bar bouquet from my Sister Naomi and her husband Kevin who live in Chicago. Obviously they know me pretty well, flowers are nice, but chocolate...now that's what I'm talking about!!
When Taber got home we got ready to go out on our couple birthday date. That's my "I'm really excited and hyper and hungry" face.
He took me to Benihanas. The food was amazing and our chef was hilarious! So entertaining and fun.
Getting creative with the fried rice

We had cake and opened presents with the girls. Taber, being the thoughtful guy that he is, even wrapped up some little presents for Brinley and Teya which made Teya's whole night.
He also surprised me with a book. I was sure it was a cookbook because that's what I asked for. But when I opened it though this is what I found: Guide to Finishing Your First Triathlon. Um yeah, I don't think I EVER said I wanted to do that. I guess this is my payback for getting Taber a Guide to Finishing your First Marathon Book back in April for his birthday. This should be interesting...

My other fun surprise is a trip to Boston. Last week Taber found out he had to go there for a business trip so he decided to take me along. We called my mom with only a week's notice and asked if she would fly out to watch the girls. Even though she works full time, she managed to pull some strings and flew in yesterday. We spent the day together playing with the girls, getting pedicures, and of course, eating lots of yummy food. Taber and I are taking off today and are excited to see a little bit of New England. Thanks to everyone for all the kind birthday wishes, I am without a doubt, feeling the love.

I'll admit, I had a "feeling old" moment when I saw that my cake said "Happy Birthday Mom" and not "Becca". Then I realized what a compliment that was because being a mom is awesome, and 29 really isn't old. : )

Happy Birthday Becca!
Today is Becca's birthday and so in honor of this momentous day I thought I would take over her blog for a minute and share a few of the many things that I love about Becca. Happy birthday love!
10 things I love about Becca
1. I love the way you love our girls. I love how you have so many holey jeans because of all the time you spend on your knees playing with our girls.
2. I love your eyes. You have the most beautiful eyes in the world. Your eyes are stunning to look at, but you also have the gift of using your eyes to see the good in everything and everyone you meet.
3. I love your sweet tooth. How lucky am I to have our home filled with sweet moments so often.
4. I love that you have a heart of a teacher. You are so good at encouraging others to reach their best. There's no way I could have got into grad school or made it out with a good job without that encouragement.
5. I love that you are fearless. You are not afraid to take on any challenge. Whether it’s deciding that you are going to run a marathon or not even flinching to rescue a rat that has fallen into a window well.
6. I love your voice. Your voice warms the entire room when you sing. Even if we are just singing a simple primary song to the girls it sounds like we have a music star in our midst.
7. I love your sense of humor. You have the gift of making people laugh and it's a lot of fun being able to laugh often.
8. I love how you are close to the Spirit. In every major decision we have made you have always been so close to the Spirit. Even in everyday happenings you always make a point to bring the Spirit into our home.
9. I love how you are so passionate about music. I love how if a song is playing with a solid beat I know you will be moving to the music. I love that when we run together I always know when a Beyonce or Justin Timberlake song is playing on your iPod because you suddenly turn our steady pace into a sprint.
10. And most of all I love that you are my wife and best friend! Happy Birthday!

Friends in high places
Now I'm not one to do a lot of name dropping, (mainly because I don't know any famous people) but for the record, I just want everyone to know that I am friends with Angela Baldwin, Maria Tedjamulia, and Taylor West. Those names might not mean anything to you now but give them 10 years or so and I'm POSITIVE they will all be famous. : ) Maria and Angela are both amazing singers and Taylor is a renaissance man who is so good at so many things it's hard to keep up with him. Anyway, last Thursday Taylor, who is the Republican party co-chair for our senate district, invited Angela, Maria and I to sing the national anthem at the Maple Grove gubernatorial straw poll.
It was so much fun singing with such talented ladies, hobnobbing with some of the candidates for governor, and seeing Taylor in action as he emceed the whole event. (Not to mention having a place to wear my high heels to other than church! It's been awhile...) And as a bonus, I now feel more enlightened on the race for governor and enjoyed seeing a little bit of politics in action!
Maria, Angela and I just before we sang. They called us the Maple Grove Republic Women's trio. (Random side fact: Both girls were with us on the Ragnar trail! Angela ran in van 2 and Maria's husband ran as well.)
Hobnobbing with the candidates. I loved walking through there and having everyone reach out to me, shake my hand and butter me up. Sure they were probably just after my vote but still, it made me feel important. : )
Here is a little video that Angela's husband took of us singing. Enjoy!

BEYONCE!!!
Last Thursday I got spoiled beyond spoiled by my awesome friend Wendy who hooked it up with Beyonce tickets!!! Her husband got them from work and didn't want to go so it was ladies night out baby!! (And I'm sorry for the multiple exclamation points but 4 days later I still cannot get over how awesome it was so I'm still just a little excited!!!) Beyonce was amazing. Her voice, phenomenal. Her performance, incredible. Her stage presence, out of this world. I went home that night and totally downloaded two of her new songs. Thank you Wendy for a sweet girls night out and thank you Beyonce for coming to Minneapolis!
No ladies night out would be complete without awesome food. Nachos supreme with all the fixins. We were turning heads with those nachos, let me tell you!
When she sang "single ladies" We made sure to change the lyrics to "married ladies" before we put our hands up. ; )

I'm a Marathon Mama!!
Yesterday I ran Grandma's Marathon in Duluth, MN. I, Becca, the NON-runner, the girl who thought she could never run 10 miles, let alone 26.2! I DID IT! I finished it! It was one of the hardest most challenging things I have ever done in my life. The race was long, grueling and painfully difficult, but if you asked me if I'd do it again, the answer would definitely be YES!!! And I know you're probably thinking, "oh poor Becca, she lost her noodle out there on the race course." But I promise, I'm not insane. I'm empowered. The marathon made me work for something, made me face my insecurities and doubts and in the end, I found out I could beat them. When I had to dig deep and find the mental strength to finish, I learned that I was stronger than I thought. That I CAN do hard things, and that I am a finisher! Here are some details from this empowering marathon experience.
On Friday we left our kids with friends and drove up to Duluth. The packet pick up was at a big convention center where they had a fitness expo going on and a huge spaghetti dinner for all the runners. We sat at a table with 4 other people, 3 of whom were repeat Grandma's marathoners. It was great listening to all their war stories and getting some helpful tips

We booked a hotel right in front of mile 24, two miles away from the finish line. It would be a great place for Taber and my sister Naomi (whose husband was running too) to watch the race from and cheer us on. Once we got to our hotel I got everything set out for the morning. I tried on all my gear, pinned on my number, and listened to some of my power songs to pump me up. Kevin and Naomi joined us a little after midnight. We settled in for about 4 hours of sleep but I was so excited and nervous that I probably only got two. At 5 am Kevin and I got our gear on and headed to the shuttle buses to take us to the starting line.
The bus ride was LONG. the further we got away from our hotel the more nervous I started to feel. Finally we got to the starting line and excitement overcame nervousness. We had just enough time to hit the bathroom and do a few stretches before we had to line up in the chute. To kick things off they sang the national anthem and jets flew over the sky. They were blasting songs like Eye of the Tiger and Chariots of Fire to set the mood. I can't tell you how cool it felt to be there with all 6000 plus other people who were about to put their bodies and their will power to the ultimate test.
The gun went off and like a wave of molten lava the river of runners flowed toward the starting line. It took us 4 minutes to cross it.
When we got to mile marker 1 the first thing I noticed were the black flags waving. That was the weather sign for extremely high risk heat conditions. They wanted us to slow down and drink up. I knew it was hot before I saw the flags but that just confirmed that this was going to be a tough race for me. I've never trained in the heat since so I was definitely nervous!

For the first 3 miles I was sweating like a pig. But then I stopped sweating and that really worried me. I knew I needed to stay hydrated and cool so when I hit the water station at mile 5 I grabbed cup after cup from every volunteer down the line and poured it down my face, on my head, down my back and in my mouth. It was very refreshing! I did it again at mile 7 and Kevin thought it was so funny he took this little video. (Note: Kevin is hardcore runner who is training for the Chicago Marathon in Oct. He was using Grandma's as a fun run in his training. He ran it at a MUCH slower pace than his usual pace so he could run with me, which is why he has SO much energy in all of his videos!)
After mile 7 I was feeling hydrated and good. My best miles were probably 8-13. We were keeping a solid 9:30 pace, I had fuel in my tank, my legs felt good, and the scenery was gorgeous! We had amazing views of Lake Superior (which looked more like ocean superior it was so big!) And people on the course were still happy and chatty.

We got to mile 13 and the half marathon point in 2 hours 9 minutes. I stopped to walk through the water station and stretch out a little. My legs were starting to get tight and the heat was getting to me.

By mile 15 I had to stop and walk through the water station again. I stretched again and then we headed out.
At that point I was getting tired and started seeing lots of people walking or just dropping out of the race. I vowed I wouldn't walk unless we were at a water station, so I mentally focused on getting to the next one (mile 17) and pushed on. As we were trucking up a hill I heard a pace group leader telling his group to visualize the reason they were running and to focus on that as they climbed the hill. The first thing that popped into my head was Brinley's sweet little face. That got me up the hill and to the next water station. Between 17 and 19 I struggled, but once we got to 19 we entered the city and people were there to cheer us on. That helped more than I realized it would.
At mile 20 they started having water stations every mile, but I told Kevin that if we stopped I probably would'nt be able to start back up again. He agreed that we should push through so we did. By mile 21 my legs felt like lead, my feet were throbbing and my back was starting to ache. I stopped to walk and was glad I had sunglasses on so nobody would see me crying. Kevin said that this is where our will power had to kick in to get us through. He told me we didn't have to run, just shuffle. So I picked up my feet and started shuffling.

Mile 22 was the infamous lemon drop hill. Kevin told me not to stop, we're shuffling up that hill! So we shuffled and shuffled and got to the top and let out a huge yell! (which probably scared the other delirious runners around us.) Picture below is me going up the hill.
At mile 23 I could see our hotel in the distance. I thought back on that long bus ride earlier in the morning and was amazed at how far we had come. I knew Taber would be near the hotel and I held on to that knowledge to pull me forward. I saw him probably half a mile away. Tears filled my eyes and I knew I was going to do this. My rock, my strength, my greatest support in this journey was holding up a sign and cheering me on. Seeing him gave me the boost I needed to keep going. (Here's a short video Taber took as we passed him. You can see me hunched over in my shuffling position. That hunch is the reason my back is KILLING me today! You'll also notice the insane amount of energy Kevin has at mile 24, I swear he has superhuman running abilities)
Mile 25 and another hill, this one going down. Ouch ouch ouch!! My quads felt like someone took a meat pulverizer to them. We were so close to the finish but that last 1.2 miles felt like FOREVER! At one point I thought we were near the finish and I started to run faster, only to find that we still had 1/4 mile to go.
Finally we turned a corner and saw the finish line. Like a horse coming home to the barn I picked up the pace and actually sprinted in. I passed like 5 people, I don't know where the energy came from, I just knew I was DONE!! I Finished a marathon! I couldn't hold in the tears as they handed me my medal and a flower and congratulated me on finishing the race.
All in all around 6700 runners started the race and 5600 finished it. I was a finisher!! The hot weather caused a lot of people to drop out,(93 degrees was the blacktop temperature) but I think that slowing it down in the second half and having Kevin there to push me along really helped me get through. My finish time was 4:37:54. I was pretty happy about that!

When the race was over we met up with Naomi and Taber and took a dip in Lake Superior to give our legs a little "ice bath."
Taber also brought a cooler full of ice and saran wrapped my knees and lower back which were killing me. They had a tent full of professional massage therapist giving free massages to the runners. I totally took advantage of that too.
When we got home I took a real ice bath and tried to stretch out a little but despite all of that I still woke up this morning in so much pain I could barely walk. I'm still smiling though. Pain is temporary, knowing I did what I once thought impossible is something I will hold onto forever!
Special Bonus Features: Here are two clips of me finishing the race. The first was taken by Kevin, who was running behind me so the clip is pretty shaky. The second was taken by Taber who was watching at the finish line. You can see me pick up the pace and pass people as I "sprint" into the finish.
Also special thanks to Kevin Hanks, my brother in law for being my personal photographer (and motivational coach) on the run. Not only did he find the time to take many great shots for me during the race, but I also found these little gems he took while running too. : ) Thanks Kev!

Snip Snip Chop Chop!
Yesterday was kind of a big day for haircuts in our family. Teya cut her hair for the first time ever, and I cut my hair short for the first time in 10 years.
We took Teya to this really cool place that specializes in haircuts for little kids. She was very nervous and started crying when they brought out the scissors.
Luckily they were used to dealing with that sort of thing, so they had the bubble blower come blow bubbes. That kept Teya happy for awhile. Then she started crying again.
This time they brought over a puzzle that she could work on while her hairdresser snipped away.
They even had tv's at each hair cutting station that helped keep her distracted
I took off a little more than 3 inches. 12 to be exact. I've had the same hair since my senior year of high school and it was time for a change.
I donated my hair to locks of love and because of that the salon gave me my haircut for free! Kind of a cool little bonus. : ) Every time I look in the mirror I'm still a little surprised. It'll definitely take some getting used to. Even at church today Teya's teacher couldn't find me because she didn't recognize me with my new hair. Still, I'm loving the change and glad I finally took the plunge and tried something new!
p.s. oh yeah, and Taber likes it! always a plus! : )
In the end we only took off about 3 inches. Just enough to even out the front and back.
Still, it was her very first haircut so we had to document it.

7 Happy Years
When I was 15 I wrote in my journal a list of all the things I wanted in a future husband. My teenager self inlcuded such important details as 1) must play guitar, 2)be athletic 3)make me laugh and 4) be good looking. Well lucky lucky me, not only did I marry an amazing man who is responsible, hard working, intelligent, honest, devoted, and good with children, he also happens to play guitar, is athletic, always makes me laugh, oh yeah, and gets an A++ in the good looks department! Happy Anniversary babe! Enjoy a walk down memory lane!
