A Binky Story

Once upon a time a mommy had a baby. And sometimes the baby would cry and cry. but then one day Mommy found a magical cure to all her tears, a tiny harmless little thing called a binky. Insert binky, no more crying! Baby and Mommy were very happy and they both grew to love the magical binky.

Then baby started getting bigger. And baby wanted binky even when she wasn't crying. Mommy thought, well that's okay, she's still just a baby, whatever makes her happy.

Baby continued to grow and binky kept getting more and more mouth time. Mommy thought, well, she hasn't even started to talk, when she starts talking I'll take it away.

Baby, now toddler, started to talk but binky still didn't go away. Infact, now that baby could talk she let mommy know in no in no uncertain terms how much she loved binky and how sad she would be if mommy took it away.

As baby started becoming a little girl Mommy finally cracked down and banished binky to bedtime only. Somehow the little girl still managed to negotiate plenty of "one special times" to suck her binky outside of bed.

Then the little girl became a big sister. The transition was difficult and Mommy found herself giving in more and more to the binky.

The little girl turned 3 and what did she ask for for her birthday? Why a binky of course! Such a simple request, how could mommy say no?

Then one day Mommy looked at her little girl and thought, "What in the world is my 3 year old doing sucking a binky!"
Mommy realized she had put this off long enough. She always thought, "I'll take it away after the baby comes, after we move, after we go out of town, after this trip, etc...." But she knew there would always be something to rationalize holding on. It was time for the little girl (and mommy) to let it go.

So Mommy told the little girl about a new baby that was born that needed some toys and a binky and asked the little girl if she could give him hers. The little girl (with a BIG heart) saw the picture of the little baby and agreed to part with her most beloved possession. Together with Daddy they put together a care package with the binky, sealed it up, and "sent it off" to the baby. The little girl was very brave during the day but that night she cried and cried for her binky. She cried so long and so hard that she finally ended up crashing on the floor in mommy's room. Mommy slept on the floor next to her to help her through that difficult first night.

It has now been a week and a half since the little girl said goodbye to her binky. She has done amazingly well, and despite one or two minor meltdowns at night, hasn't cried over binky and has gone to sleep just fine without it. Mommy is so very proud of her little girl (and herself) For finally learning to let go.

THE END (p.s. Here is a little video of Teya saying goodbye to binky)

I waited until Parker was 3 too so don't feel bad! I think it made it sooo much easier. We did the binkie fairy thing and Parker had no problems whatsoever with giving it up. Yay for Teya the big girl! And yay for you! I loved not having to scramble for binkies all the time...well...at least for Parker. By then Makenna was hooked.(:

Hahahaha! Cute story. Love it! Very good idea too of having her send the binky to a baby who needed it :) I'm not that creative or patient. I just took it away from Mason and refused to give it back. Then we made sure Maile never even used one. You're a much nicer mommy than I am :)

Hooray for Teya! Now if only I could convince Rory to send her thumb to a new baby who needs it.

Yeah! I am so proud of you Becca (oh yes, and Teya!) We always cut a hole in the end of our kids and they couldn't get any suction that way. Not nice, but effective!

Hip hip Hooray! Good job Bec and Teya, I knew you guys could do it. I loved the story. I don't know which is better the fingers or the binky. Fingers are nice because you don't have to scramble for binkies, but you can't cut them up or send them away. I loved all the cute pictures of Teya growing up. She's such a cutie.

Oh what a big girl now. I can't believe Miss Teya is 3 years old. I'm glad that the weaning is going very well. She was sooo nice to send her beloved binky to another baby. It really does show how grown up she's getting.

That is really cute, she was so happy to give it to the poor little baby. You taught her about giving and got rid of the binky all in one shot, way to go!

Oh, I feel so bad for her and the tough transition. I am glad that she is doing so well with it now. We have started taping Callie's fingers in an effort to get her to stop. But we have not conquered the nap or night time sucking yet. I wish I had a binkie that we could take away.

Wow! I am so impressed... wahoo Teya!! I am so happy you found something that works! Hopefully one of these days we can join the no-binky club.

I hope you didn't tell her that you were sending it to her Uncle Chris! That might confuse here!

You DID send the binky to me...right??

That was such a good idea to send it away in a little care package - I love the little "goodbye to binky" video. Also love all the binky pictures! My favorite is the crazy hair/pink onesie on the couch.

None of my kids will do binkys after the first few weeks or suck their fingers - I always wish they would so I could have something to pop in their mouth, but I guess I should be grateful I don't have to deal with the weaning.
