Mr. Turtle

On Saturday night we were driving home from dinner with some friends when Taber almost ran right over this little turtle who was crossing the road. Fearing someone else might hit him I made Taber turn around and plucked him off the road in an effort to save his life. I planned on releasing him back in the wild but thought we should hang on to him till we could find a good safe place to let him go. In the mean time Taber got some dirt and rocks and filled up Teya's kiddie pool to make Mr. Turtle a little home in our backyard.

That night we had a big storm and I woke up at 2am to loud thunder and pouring rain. My first thought was "Oh no! Mr. Turtle is gonna get soaked!" So I ran downstairs to "save him" from the rain. When I looked out on him though he was in little turtle heaven! He was just soaking up the rain with his neck stretched all the way out to catch every little drop. He really is the cutest thing (something I never thought I'd say about a non-furry animal) and Teya is totally in love with him. I know he needs to go back to the wild, but I think we may just have to keep him a little while longer ; )

Mr. Turtle is so cute! Funny how you can get attached to something like that. What do you guys feed him?

How adorable! I love it! I love turtles. Teya looks so happy with him! Nice way to keep her entertained I bet! Yeah, I was also wondering what you feed him! heehee. I had a turtle as a kid. My sister was disgusted because I had this special "reptile" lotion that I was supposed to put on her twice a day. She thought it was sick. But I loved her! heehee.

Keep him! He would be an easy pet. I bet Teya is just fascinated. I like his little habitat in the kiddie pool=).

So far we've fed him lettuce, grapes, and some clovers we picked in the yard. I think they eat bugs too so hopefully he'll be able to catch some that get in his pool.

I think you should keep him. We just lost our poor baby turtle, they make fabulous pets.

That's awesome! I would keep the turtle for as long as I could too. Teya looks so cute holding him!
Y'know, it's actually illegal to BUY turtles in TN. You won't see anyone sell them in any stores. Good for you to save him!

Stephan here. Try feeding him kale. It has more calcium than most other greens. Turtles need a lot of calcium for their shells and bones. There's also some stuff made for tortoises(what you have is an eastern box turtle which is almost classified as a tortoise.) called tortoise yummies that you can buy in a pet store. It'll have basically all the nutrition it needs. Also, make sure Teya washes her hands very thoroughly after handling it. Turtles carry salmonella. That's why they're illegal to purchase here. Enough kids got sick and a law was passed.

I'm sure Teya will remember Mr. Turtle forever. I still remember all of my wild life friends that we managed to hold onto for while!
