With the new baby on it's way we've been trying to get Teya excited about being a big sister and doing more "big girl" things. We've kind of let her be the baby for a little too long and as a result she has some pretty entrenched baby habits that we've been trying to break. The biggest one being her binky. I always said that when she turned two I would take away her binky, but her birthday came and went, and we still hadn't gotten rid of it. She was a super binky addict (as you can see for her double binky picture below), she had to have it at all times, in bed, in the car, at church, at friend's houses, in the store, playing at home, etc.. Whenever we forgot it she would have a major meltdown, so I was terrified of taking it away. Finally though we decided that enough was enough so I began operation "bye bye binky."

I wanted to kind of ease her into it, so I decided that she could still have it in bed only. The first day was hard, when she woke up I told her she had to leave her binky in bed because she was a big girl and big girls didn't need a binky. She cried when I made her leave it behind but I quickly distracted her with her favorite breakfast and the binky was forgotten. Throughout the day she would suddenly realize she didn't have it and say, "Hey! Where my binky go?" I would then remind her that it was in her bed because she was a big girl and that she could have it when she went night night. Most of the day was okay, but the hardest part was being in the car. She cried and cried and I almost caved in, but after that first car ride without it, she has been fine.
So far it's been about 2 weeks and she has been really good about not having her binky during the day. When I go to get her in the mornings, she pops her binky out of her mouth, throws it on her bed and says, "bye bye binky!" She also gets really excited for naps and bedtime because as soon as I say it's time for bed her eyes light up and she says, "Yay! my binky!!!" So it's kind of nice because it gives her something to look forward to. I have no idea how we'll get rid of it at night time, but for now I'm just happy that I don't have to be scorned in public anymore when people see my two year old daughter noshing on a binky.
Next up: Potty Training and moving into a big girl bed. Wish us luck!

You're so funny Becca! I think you're doing a great job! Chenoa never liked binkys. There was a time I wish she did. But now I'm glad she never got hooked on them. Her problem, or MY problem I should say is her bottle. I think when we finally get settled in our new apartment, we will have to try again. I'm excited for you guys...with the new baby just around the corner! I think Teya will be a great big sister. I'm sure all the big girl tendancies will kick in once she realizeds she's a big girl and isn't a "baby" anymore! haha. good luck w/ potty training...looking forward to more funny blogs!
Very funny. Anna just chewed a hole in one binky last night and looked at it and was like, hmmm this isn't right. So she went to her spare. Well, she chewed a hole in her spare tonight! she still went to bed with it, but I'm really debating about whether or not to buy anymore. I didn't know you could chew a hole in it!
Teya will be a wonderful big sister and will just love to love on baby sissy when she's here.
Good job with the binky. My first was passionate about the binky. We ended up taking it away "cold-turkey" at 18 mo. It was a little traumatic.
Thats a good idea to only let her have it in the bed. And then eventually she won't even need it in there...hopefully!
Our boys wouldn't take them after about 7 months, which made it easy for me. Although i've heard its tough for kids normally to just give it up!
You're awesome Becca!
Alli was EXACTLY the same way and I did EXACTLY as you did. I limited it to bed time about a month ago, hoping to gently wean her before her 2nd bday. It's gone really well and it's never been easier to put her down for naps (not that she gave me a problem any way). She sleeps longer and hangs out in her bed after nap before calling me because she just likes to have her "su-su" a little longer. I'm with you though... now what? How do I break that final attachment? My only other pacifier kid was Darren and I cut the tip off all his pacifiers. When he'd find one lying around the house he's stick it in his mouth and say "broken!" He was 18 mo. He didn't like it and since they were all that way, he just quit. I don't think Alli will be so easy. Good luck with Teya. Let me know what you come up with. I may need a new idea!
Binkys are so cute. It can be tricky to wean them from it, as you're experiencing! You're doing great with it!
Teya is so adorable. In every picture I see of her, she looks like a little doll.
Anyway, I know that has nothing to do with the post, I just thought I'd let you know that.
And I bet she'll love having a little baby to take care of.
Good luck with the binky - it sounds like it's going well. My kids all refuse to use binkys except for the first few months. I always wish they would, except I guess it's nice not to have to deal with the weaning.
Ha! I don't know how we will ever get rid of the finger sucking. We can't leave her fingers behind! Are you really going to try the potty training soon? Wow- that's ambitious!
