Sticks and Stones may break your bones, but the monkey bars will do it for sure!

Well we have our first broken bone. We made it 6 years into parenthood before it happened so you know, I feel pretty good about that : )

It happened on a Saturday. I was up in the mountains mapping out hiking trails in prep for girls camp, so Taber decided to take the kids to Teya's school to play on the playground there. Teya has been begging us all year to take her there so she can try out the monkey bars. You see, kindergartners aren't normally allowed on the monkey bars because the teacher says, they will break their arms.

Well apparently the teacher knows what she's talking about because sure enough, miss Teya lost her grip, fell and busted her poor little arm. The urgent care closes early on Saturdays (and I am a cheap wad that didn't want to pay thousands of dollars for the emergency room) so we had to wait until Sunday to get an X-ray.

X-ray confirmed our suspicions, broken arm, right by the elbow. They put her in a temporary cast and instructed us to see the ortho doc Monday morning.

Taber took her to the ortho doc and I guess everyone was pretty smitten with the cutie little kindergartner who broke her arm.

They were all out of pink casts so she went for her second choice, Red.
She'll have the cast on for 3 weeks, then they'll cut it off, take an X-ray, and decide if she needs one longer or if she can get by with a splint.

It has been an adjustment, but she has adapted surprisingly well and can dress herself, put on her shoes and socks, and buckle her seatbelt now with no problem. Best of all, she's been able to collect signatures from all her favorite people, including her beloved Kindergarten teacher Mrs. Plouffe, and the greatest superhero of all, Daddy : )

Poor Girl. Glad she is adjusting well. I can't believe she can buckle her seat belt with that thing on her arm. Brooklyn can hardly do hers with two perfectly good arms (but that may have to do with her attention span.) Anyway, I hope it heals up quick and that it is completely covered with signatures by the time she gets to cut it off! :)

I broke my arm in kindergarten as well...but it wasn't on the monkey bars! Chad and I are so glad we aren't the only tightwads in the world who would make their kid wait a day to be x-rayed! Thank you for that! It always amazes me how resilient kids are, I am glad to see that Miss Teya is adjusting to life with a cast so well. I used to stick pencils down mine to scratch my arm cause it itched so bad...probably not the best idea!

That is so sad! But totally ironic that they aren't allowed to play on the monkey bars because the teachers says they will break their arms!

You wouldn't even know she broke her arm. Seriously...who looks that happy with a broken bone?!?! Hope it heals quick and that she can move out of the cast at the first check-up!

I wonder how many kindergarteners broke their arms before they started banning them altogether! Makenzie does monkey bars all the time and she's old enough now that I don't feel like I need to go spot her or anything. But I'm sure I"ll be paranoid now! haha
I can tell from the picture that the medical staff just loved cute little Teya. That picture looks like it should be in an orthopedic doctor's brochure or something!
Glad she is adjusting well to the cast and hope it heals quickly!

That is so sad! She seems like she was such a good sport. My sister broke her arm on the monkey bars in kindergarten, too - I didn't realize it was so common - geesh. A few days after I first read this post (I didn't comment then because I was holding Cindy on my lap), we were at the park and Lizza was crossing the monkey bars and fell. She came running up to me crying and holding her arm, and I panicked because I had just read about how Teya had broken hers. Luckily there were no broken bones for us, but I think I'll have her wait till she's a little older to try them again.
